FAQ's for the General Public:

I paid off the loan on my car but never sent the title to DMV to have the lien holder's name removed; now I want to sell the car but can not find the title. Can you obtain a duplicate title for me without the old lien holders name on it?

We can contact the lien holder of record and request a notarized lien release be sent to you, or if you give us written authorization, we can have the lien release sent to us. Once the lien release is received and we have the proper documents and fees from you, we can apply for a duplicate title without the lien holder's name on it.

I am a California resident and want to purchase a new vehicle from another state. Will I have any problems registering and titling the vehicle in California?

Only those new motor vehicles and new motor vehicle engines which meet California's stringent emission standards and test procedures which have been certified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) can be used and registered in California. The Health and Safety Code prohibits specified individuals from importing, delivering, purchasing, renting, leasing, acquiring, or receiving new motor vehicles, new motor vehicle engines, or motor vehicles with new motor vehicle engines for use, registration, or resale in this state unless certified to comply with existing California emission standards.

I want to give one of my children my vehicle. Do I have to take the car in and have a smog inspection done?

No, California has an exemption that can be claimed if the transfer is being done between immediate family members. (Parents, child, and grandparent) The smog would be due however if renewal fees were due and the vehicle was due for the normal biannual smog inspection.

I am a resident of California and just purchased a vehicle from an individual. The title that I was given was from another state. How long do I have to transfer the vehicle into my name?

You have 20 days from the date of first operation in California to pay your fees before penalties are due.
